My Face On Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

The funny thing about selling stock images for a living is that you’ll never know where they might pop up next.  Seven years into this business and my stock images are finally starting to show up in bigger and badder places.  A friend of ours was watching Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (it’s on after the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on NBC) and spotted my face during the “Thank you notes” segment.  The joke was about 5:00 shadows, and he rephrased it to be in military time, 17 hundred o’clock shadows.  It wasn’t the funniest joke in the skit, but I still had my face on national television for a solid 6 seconds or so.  All of my friends and family definitely got a huge kick out of it.  That beats the last instance of the 1 second my image flashed in the Jennifer Lopez commercial for Kohl’s.

It’s always so hilarious when these old stock photos pop up oh so randomly.  That image was shot in the same series as my infamous nose picker shot, about 6 years or so ago.  I had nothing but a basic Canon 20D camera, some window light, and a $80 50mm f1.8 lens.  Why did they pick this photo?  I honestly don’t know.  It’s definitely not my best mug shot.  I’m guessing it’s because I had it keyworded “unshaven”.  If I hadn’t done that, I highly doubt they would have even considered it, because they wouldn’t have been able to even find it.  I wouldn’t even call it a five o’clock shadow… but more like a 3 day or 48 hour shadow.  Let this example of keywording be a lesson to all of those SEO heads and my fellow stock photographers reading this.  Actually a lot of people have told me they think I look like Jimmy Fallon – I honestly don’t see it, but could that have been the reason they chose the shot?  Ha!  Could be.

Here’s the clip of Jimmy Fallon’s Thank You Notes segment, if you want to watch it for yourself. I’m a big fan of Jimmy Fallon, and love his show whenever I can actually stay up late enough to watch it.  My wife and I even once attended a taping of one of the show in NYC, and ended up watching ourselves on TV later that night while they did a segment where contestants had to run through the audience seating area.  To have a stock image of ours actually appear on the show was really cool.

Don’t forget – the next time you design anything or do some video production and end up using a stock imagery or stock footage of some person, you might not even realize that the subject in that photo could and might actually “see themselves” in it.  All the more reason to never use images of people in sensitive uses (ie: medical conditions, sexually suggestive, or drug addiction).  I’m a pretty good sport about seeing my images being used in advertising, but the moment someone portrays me or any of the models I’ve photographed as being a crackhead or someone with an STD, you have better believe they’re going to hear from me.
